Dynamic duo take over reins at Hospice Shop
Two familiar faces in the eastern bay have joined forces to manage Whakatane’s Hospice Shop.
Maggie McKenzie began working in the shop in December last year and Karla Hammond joined her this month to share the manager’s role. They take over from Wendy Wright who managed the shop for a year, building it into an extremely successful retail outlet and fundraising stream for Hospice Eastern Bay of Plenty (EBOP).
People may recognise Maggie from her time at For Art’s Sake in Ohope or at Ruby Dunes where she currently works on Saturday afternoons.
Maggie has bought music to the Hospice Shop and said it creates a wonderful environment for shoppers.
“We’re much more than just a retail store at the Hospice Shop. We experience every emotion, from tears to joy and often people just need a cup of tea and to talk.
Playing old records creates a wonderful atmosphere and the good will in store is really strong,” she said.
Karla has been involved in a number of community projects, one of the most significant being Project Hope to raise funds for the Whakatane Cancer Centre. She is also the current district governor for Quota International.
With years of experience working with volunteers, Karla said she was instantly attracted to the role.
“I just read the ad and thought ‘that’s me’. I enjoy working with volunteers and in the short time I’ve been here I’ve just loved the welcoming atmosphere that’s created in store.”
Karla and Maggie say there are a lot of quality treasures to be found at the Hospice Shop.
“When someone finds something special they get a sparkle in their eye.
We have gorgeous jewellery, bric-a-brac and the odd rare find being donated all the time. We also have a great selection of women’s, men’s and children’s clothing and books. It’s worth popping in on a regular basis to ensure you don’t miss out,” Maggie said.
Hospice is also a Mecca for the creative types amongst you. Look no further to give your home a funky retro makeover with vintage linens and furniture, or to create stylish gifts with a personal touch. You’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re in the wrong place as you look at the stylish window displays …… step inside and take your time browsing the world of the pre-loved.
The Hospice Shop is open Monday to Friday from 9:30 – 5pm and on Saturday’s from 10am – 1pm. Donations of quality clothing, bric-a-brac, books, jewellery, linen and working electrical goods are always welcome.
Hospice Shop is always looking for enthusiastic, caring volunteers! Please contact Maggie or Karla at Hospice Shop on 07 307 2301 if you are interested.
