Community Palliative Care Registered Nurse

Community Palliative Care Registered Nurse

Hours are negotiable

Based in Whakatāne

Sadly, one of our beloved nurses is hanging up her stethoscope and retiring. But it’s ok - we’re practicing our happy faces, hiding the tears, being supportive - that sort of thing. We’re not at all jealous about being able to go to a cafe just ‘whenever’. We’re truly happy for her.

We’re also now looking for a nurse to step into the nurse-shaped space in the nurses office. If you’re nurse-shaped, have a passion for palliative care, and love doing nurse-shaped things, then please, read on.

Over the past two years, our clinical team has gone from strength to strength and is now a very sturdy clinical team of 13, including a doctor, clinical nurse specialists, palliative care nurses, a counsellor and palliative care assistants - but with the vast Eastern Bay of Plenty community to care for, we need to maintain our super sturdy clinical team.

We’re looking for an experienced Community Palliative Care nurse who shares our passion for making the end-of-life journey as comfortable and dignified as possible. In this role, you’ll work closely with our clinical team, patients, carers, and the wider community.

Strong assessment skills, advanced communication abilities, and excellent time management are must-haves. As our services grow, we’re also introducing more tech-based equipment, so confidence with computers and mobile devices is important.

Our community needs us, and we want to be able to fulfil these needs to the best of our abilities.

We are a small dynamic team that punches well above its weight and uses innovative ways to extend the reach of palliative care within the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

You will need;

  • Current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

  • Current New Zealand Drivers license

  • Be a citizen of New Zealand or have permanent residency.

The role will require you to be confident to work independently in the community to;

  • Provide culturally appropriate holistic community care to patients and whānau affected by life-limiting illnesses,

  • Skilfully assess patient and whānau needs,

  • Provide pain and symptom management in collaboration with the GP and other healthcare providers,

  • Liaise with, educate and support other healthcare providers such as in ARC facilities.

Have we sold it to you yet?

There’s no night shifts or shift work however you will be part of an overnight and weekend on call roster (approx.4-5 weekly). If you want to further your education, we will encourage you to do this and will provide the support – cheerleaders included.

We love families. If you have a family (this includes pets), you’re almost expected to share stories of your weekends with us since we’ll be your new work family.

Our work environment is very supportive full of exceptional huggers and great listeners. The admin team is not only there to support the clinical team, but to provide emotional support and cake for the days that aren’t as upbeat. It’s an unfortunate fact that this job in particular, is emotionally tough. The working environment here has thus grown super supportive and cake just magically appears quite regularly. In preparation of this, we recommend supplementing your new position with a treadmill!

Why live in the Eastern Bay of Plenty?

Our sunny slice of paradise offers something for everyone. We know you’ll love it too.

The warmer months bring even more buzz to town, from food festivals to marathons to live bands. There are so many outdoor activities to choose from to lap it all up too - whether that be a beach walk, or a bike ride along the river.

Are you a foodie? Look no further. In the colder months, the cafés up their game. The Whakatāne township is also home to the most delicious cuisine, from award-winning pies to Korean fusion to freshly baked croissants at Sunday’s markets.

If water activities are what you're into, you'll never get bored. There's kayaking, paddleboarding and a great surf beach. Jetskiiers and watersports frequent the harbour, and further along Ōhope Beach on a windy day, you can join the kite surfers. One of the only marine volcanic dive spots in New Zealand is off the coast of Whakatāne too. If you’d rather stay on the land, grab your rod and a chair, and find a spot on the wharf at high tide to join the other fishermen enjoying a lazy weekend.

Like weekends away? Whakatāne is only a few hours’ drive from the mountain or the lakes if you’ve seen enough of the sand.  It’s also a quick drive to Mount Maunganui if you’re keen to dabble in some shopping and the city life, before enjoying a scenic drive back to the traffic free Whakatāne.

The Eastern Bay of Plenty is beautiful, and we know you'll love it here! Come and join us!
