Community Palliative Care Registered Nurse

Are you passionate about palliative care?

We need another fabulous Palliative Care Nurse to join our not-so-wee-anymore (but-still-weely-awesome) team. Over the past year and a half, we’ve been growing our wee team into a very mighty clinical team of 13, including a doctor, clinical nurse specialists, palliative care nurses, counsellor and palliative care assistants - but with the vast Eastern Bay of Plenty community to care for, we need to keep building our far-from-wee (weely) awesome workforce to keep up with the growing patient load.

We’re looking for someone who shares our passion for making the end-of-life journey as comfortable and dignified as possible. In this role, you’ll work closely with our clinical team, patients, carers, and the wider community. Strong assessment skills, advanced communication abilities, and excellent time management are must-haves. As our services grow, we’re also introducing more tech-based equipment, so confidence with computers and mobile devices is important. We need someone who is a seasoned 'turn it off then turn it back on again' techie.

Our community needs us, and we want to be able to fulfil these needs to the best of our abilities, and if we have another nurse, we’re pretty sure this time we’ll be set.

This is a 0.8 FTE role, Mon to Fri 08.00-16.30 with rostered overnight and weekend on call duties (approx 1 weekend in 5)

Responsibilities

  • To deliver specialist palliative nursing care in consultation with patient, whanāu, patients’ GP and other health professionals as appropriate, within a community based domiciliary setting

  • To provide advice and education on pain and symptom management to patients/whanāu and generalist palliative care providers

  • To provide high quality assessment and care co-ordination, ensuring timely referral to relevant services (relative to patient and whanāu needs).

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with at least 5 years' experience

  • Experience of working in a Hospice or Hospital Palliative Care Team

  • Ideally working towards PG Cert

You will also need;

  • Current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

  • Current New Zealand Drivers license

  • Be a citizen of New Zealand or have permanent residency.

Have we sold it to you yet?

There’s no night shifts or shift work however you will be part of an overnight and weekend on call roster (approx.4-5 weekly). If you want to further your education, we will encourage you to do this and will provide the support – cheerleaders included.

We love families. If you have a family (this includes pets), you’re almost expected to share stories of your weekends with us since we’ll be your new work family.

Our work environment is very supportive full of exceptional huggers and great listeners. The admin team is not only there to support the clinical team, but to provide emotional support and cake for the days that aren’t as upbeat. It’s an unfortunate fact that this job in particular, is emotionally tough. The working environment here has thus grown super supportive and cake just magically appears quite regularly. In preparation of this, we recommend supplementing your new position with a treadmill and/or join our regular staff step competitions
