Updated: Nov 4

The 40th Annual General Meeting of Hospice Eastern Bay of Plenty was held at the Hospice offices on Goulstone Road on Wednesday, 29th October. Members of the community, staff, and volunteers came together to review the financial year, celebrate achievements, and acknowledge the challenges and successes.

The meeting was an opportunity to review the financial year, celebrate achievements, and acknowledge the challenges and successes that have shaped our journey. It was also a time to express gratitude to those who continue to give their time, expertise, and care to ensure Hospice EBOP can fulfil its mission of providing quality palliative support to our community.

Among the year’s key highlights was the remarkable growth of our service, which has expanded from caring for 30 patients at any one time to 77. Our nurses collectively travelled 184,950 kilometres during the financial year — a significant increase from 132,476 the previous year — demonstrating their dedication to reaching patients wherever they are.

We also took the time to honour the incredible contributions of our volunteers, recognising those who have given 5, 10, 15, and even 40 years of service. A particularly special moment was acknowledging Margaret Brierley, who has volunteered with Hospice for 40 years. As one of the very first members of the Hospice team back in 1995, Margaret reflected fondly on the organisation’s humble beginnings — from meetings held in a small room with only one light on to save money, to the thriving service we have today.

The appointment of a new grant writer has been another positive development, enabling us to secure much-needed funding to improve security systems and upgrade palliative equipment, ensuring safer and more efficient care delivery.

A huge thank you was extended to our outgoing Board Chair, Toni Owens, for her leadership and unwavering commitment to Hospice over the past two years. We also warmly welcomed Matt McKevitt as our new Board Chair, with Glenn Jones stepping into the role of Deputy Chair.

Sincere appreciation was shared with our Board, staff, volunteers, and supporters for their continued dedication and unity of purpose. The afternoon closed with a shared sense of pride, gratitude, and optimism for the year ahead — a fitting conclusion to our 40th Annual General Meeting.
